Spoleto, one of America’s premier performing arts festivals, came to Charleston with the guidance of composer Carlo Menotti in 1977 as the US counterpart to The Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy.
Since then, it has become a centerpiece for a long list of Charleston festivals, drawing thousands from around the world each year.
The aim of the festival is to present programs “of the highest artistic caliber while maintaining a dedication to young artists, a commitment to all forms of the performing arts, a passion for contemporary innovation, and an enthusiasm for providing unusual performance opportunities for established artists.”
Piccolo Spoleto, a festival that happens in conjunction with Spoleto, includes hundreds of performances by local and regional performing artists.
